We have a day long layover in miami. We are staying at the Doubletree Grand Hotel Biscayne Bay. Can you suggest some restaurants/shopping/attractions that are within walking distance or a short taxi ride? We want to experience what we can of miami in that short time.

You're in for a treat staying at Biscayne.
There are some great restaurants - Cioppino at the Ritz Carlton is the best upmarket Italian. Le Croisic is a nice French restaurant, and if you want a steak ( who doesn't?) check out the Linda B. Steak House - not your average steak house though - this is just a bit special!
This whole area is one big attraction - but why not go down to Cape Florida Lighthouse which was built in the early 1800s. Its the oldest building in south Florida and has spent its lifetime helping seamen negotiate the Straits of Florida. Its actually part of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.
