Times Square is an area - not an exact place - it spans a number of blocks - and there are many hotels in the Times Square area. An excellent choice is The Belvedere on West 48th Street and Eighth Avenue (the Theatre District). The bus stops right outside and there is a subway stop there too. The staff is very helpful, they have a great concierge and the hotel is very clean. Every room has a mini-fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker - you can save money by having breakfasts in your room and if you have leftovers from your restaurant meals, you can store and reheat them. The hotel prices for rooms start at $160 - a steal for a three star hotel in New York - you can probably negotiate an even better rate at Orbitz or PriceLine.

If you want to save some money, find something in Queens. You can get a direct train(express during weekdays) to time square. You will save a bunch.
